28. Jun campaign picking up steam

Student organization 28. Jun, renowned for sending $1.5 million worth of medical aid to Kosovo, is gaining media momentum with increased support from international press and Serbian athletes and celebrities. In his interview with Serbian national TV station RTS, Filip Filipi, president of 28.Jun stated “we plan to strengthen our organization by gathering supporters on a global scale and sending out two more containers of aid, one for Serbia and one for Republika Srpska.  In the meantime, our priority lies in securing financial resources to make all of this happen”. The story also made the cover of Vesti, the most widely-read publication in the Serbian diaspora.

28.Jun also received support via social media, most notably from tennis world champ Novak Djokovic, NBA legend Vlade Divac, Oscar-nominated director Emir Kusturica and rap super group Beogradski Sindikat. 28.Jun is a student-driven Serbian organization engaged in political, social and philanthropic functions pertaining to Serbian interests as well as a supporter of refugees, internally displaced and abandoned people. 28. Jun completes global awareness campaign, sends $1.5 million worth of aid to Kosovo Serbs

The Serbian diaspora organization 28. Jun organized a global awareness campaign and donation drive which resulted in the shipment of medical supplies worth over $1.5 mil to the Gracanica Medical Center in Kosovo. The extensive effort that spanned over 6 months was launched in mid-October when musician and 28. Jun President Filip Filipi released a song entitled “Kosovka” to raise funds and awareness aimed at helping Serbs in Kosovo. A poster campaign uniting Serbian communities in over 80 cities across 30 different countries around the world propelled the drive, which culminated with the shipment of the 40 ft, 11,000 lbs container filled with medical supplies to Kosovo.

Outraged by the K-FOR shooting of civilians last September, Filipi, whose grandmother is from Kosovo, released “Kosovka” on iTunes to gather funds and draw attention to the deplorable living conditions of Serbs in Kosovo. In conjunction with the song, an updated version of the famous “Kosovka Devojka” painting was created by 28. Jun Vice President Marko Sejat and auctioned off to raise additional capital. Additionally, 1000 posters of the updated iconic image were printed and sent to Serbian communities throughout the diaspora with the campaign motto "Mi smo sa vama" ("We are with you") and instructions on how to help. Substantial coverage by the Serbian media drew other groups and individuals to the cause and it was agreed that the drive should focus on helping Serbs living in the isolated enclaves of central and southern Kosovo. After much research, efforts zeroed in on sending aid to the Medical Center in Grancanica which is responsible for providing assistance to the 40,000 Serbs living below the Ibar river.

To accomplish this herculean task, 28. Jun collaborated with a number of groups which included Eagles Nest Foundation, Save Serbian Children, Direct Effect USA, Serbian-Orthodox Youth Association (SOYA), Serbian Student Organization (S.S.O.) University of Illinois in Chicago, Kosovski Zavet, St. Sava Church in Houston, St. Petka Church in Melbourne and Ujedinjene Srpske Dijaspore. The drive in the highly Serbian-populated region of southern Ontario was spear-headed by 28. Jun Director of Strategic Planning, Nikola Peric. Further U.S. fundraising efforts were handled by 28. Jun members Milo Dubak in the Midwest and Andrija Stanojcic in the South, with Sasa Dodos covering the west coast and Sabrina Radakovic overseeing the international drive. Other notable contributors include Jeanne Kimn, Milos Supica, Dr. Katarina Varinac-Bozic, Dr. Slavko Tokanovic, Milic Stankovic, the Belgrade based political rap group Beogradski Sindikat and various Serbian celebrities who shared the cause with their fan bases via social media.

The container left the port of Seattle, WA on March 12th, where 28. Jun members joined forces with Eagles Nest Foundation volunteers to load the supplies. It is currently en route to Thessaloniki, Greece where it will be offloaded and then transported by truck through Macedonia and into Gracanica. The container is scheduled to reach Gracanica's Medical Center just before Serbian Easter on April 15th. The political situation in Kosovo has rendered its borders some of the most difficult in the world and custom clearance took months of strenuous negotiations. Filipi revealed that this final step presented a considerable obstacle : "After contacting the UN, EULEX, EU, Red Cross, World Health Organization and many others to no avail we ended up having to rely on personal contacts to manage the container's safe passage into Kosovo. At times, this difficult campaign took its toll on us but we prevailed since the cause was absolutely worth it. It's the most important project I have ever been involved in." Vice president Marko Sejat added: "My comrades and I are fighting a different kind of battle; one that promotes justice, preservation of our nation, its rehabilitation and advancement, one that I am extremely proud to be a part of. I hope that Serbs worldwide will follow our example once they see how much we can achieve when we operate as a unified force."

28.Jun is a student-driven Serbian organization engaged in political, social and philanthropic functions pertaining to Serbian interests. Previous campaigns have included the boycott of the Chelsea Handler program as part of an anti-defamation initiative. 28. Jun organized a media offensive to condemn Chelsea Handler's xenophobic comments about Serbia. Similarly, in January of 2012, 28. Jun objected to the demonization of Serbs propagated by Angelina Jolie's film "In the Land of Blood and Honey". Alongside a petition, the organization addressed an open letter to Jolie expressing Serbian concerns and exposing the dangers of her actions from a global standpoint. Consequently, 28. Jun played a significant role in the cancellation of her film release in Serbia. Encouraged by the success of the current campaign, 28. Jun is working on the shipment of two additional containers to Serbia and Republika Srpska. The organization strongly relies on the contribution of Serbian communities from around the world and hopes that individuals and businesses alike will continue to engage with them in making a difference. 28. Jun Facebook page passes 10,000 members

We are delighted to announce our Facebook page has surpassed 10,000 members in just over 6 months! Based on Facebook 'insights' the organization is largely youth-driven with roughly 80% of members being under 34 years old. The gender composition is nearly equal with males making up a small majority. Most members in the Balkans come from Serbia, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Montenegro, Macedonia and Croatia. While the majority of diaspora members come from the United States, Canada, Australia, Germany and Austria.

The numbers show 28. Jun is unique in its ability to attract young members who have shown to be apathetic to established Serbian political parties and organizations. Constructive causes, media coverage and creative campaigns have played vital roles in our growth and development. We encourage everyone to 'like' our page and continue to support us in our projects.

Serbs won't watch Angelina's Film

FULL STORY

The article acknowledges the role 28. Jun's petition played in the likely cancellation of Angelina Jolie's movie showing in Serbia. We are thankful that our work is being recognized and urge everyone to sign the petition which has now accumulated over 1,500 signatures.

Letter and Petition to Angelina Jolie

Ms. Jolie

I'm writing to voice the collective displeasure of the Serbian community at certain scenes in your film 'In the Land of Blood and Honey' and recent statements you have made calling for the abandonment of Republika Srpska. Firstly, the rape scenes depicting Serbs as the sole aggressors and Bosnian Muslims as lone victims not only misconstrue history but also dangerously demonize Serbs. Secondly, despite being a very talented actress you lack the proper orientation to be making politically inflammatory statements with regards to the integrity of Serbian territory. We acknowledge incidents took place in which criminals whose nationality is Serbian committed rape against victims whose nationality is Bosnian Muslim. It is my personal opinion that life imprisonment for these miscreants is too lenient of a punishment. But if you're insinuating the compensation for these crimes should be the surrender of our territory in Republika Srpska then I ask you, by this logic, are there enough planets in our solar system to territorially compensate Serbs for what we have suffered during our history?

I would like to briefly familiarize you with the portion of Serbian history which seems to have escaped you in your research for this film. During the Middle Ages Serbia served as Christian Europe's lightening rod to absorb the Ottoman empire's push west. It proved very costly as our entire army was wiped out during the battle of Kosovo Polje in 1389. This resulted in 500 years of slavery and brutality under the Ottomans, who favored Serbian converts to Islam who would later become 'Bosnian Muslims.' Shortly after regaining our independence from the Ottomans we were invaded by the Central Powers in WWI and lost half of our male population resisting. Just as our population started to recover, WWII struck which horrific consequences. We lost over a million people fighting the Nazis while Bosnian Muslims formed their own SS divisions. To conclude a rather eventful 20th century the '90s proved to be particularly bloody. 10,000 Serbs were killed and 300,000 were expelled in the war in Croatia, 25,000 were killed in the war in Bosnia and a further 7,000 were killed and 220,000 were expelled as a result of the Kosovo war and subsequent American-led bombing.

The reason your position is so dangerous is because it presents a distorted history to an audience which has no knowledge of the background of this conflict. It would be comparable to making a WWII movie in which the main protagonist is a Nazi and the main antagonist is Jewish and presenting it to viewers who have no prior awareness of what actually took place. The real reason Serbs are demonized in the Western media is not because of some innate characteristic which leads us to murder, rape and pillage but because Serbs have always vigorously resisted foreign domination. In order to justify the bombing, occupation and dismemberment of my country, your media which is an organ of your government, dehumanizes my people at every opportunity. Certain scenes in your movie as well as your statements pertaining to Republika Srpska intentionally or unintentionally only serve to desensitize Americans towards injustices their country continues to commit against Serbs.

I also find it ironic that you had to look so far to find a love story with a backdrop of genocide when your country was built by African slaves, 55 million of whom died on their way there, on the graves of 114 million American Indians. Surely instances of rape perpetrated by slave owners and American soldiers were infinitely more numerous than what took place in the Balkans. If you were interested in something more recent perhaps the rapes and other atrocities committed by American troops in Iraq and Afghanistan could have formed a more truthful story. If your objective was to focus on the topics of 'Bosnia' and 'rape' then American 'peacekeepers' and private contractors whose presence created a market for underage sex slavery where there wasn't one before, would have made more historically accurate characters.

I implore you to rescind your statements regarding Republika Srpska, as they are clearly misinformed and potentially volatile in a part of the world where the smallest sparks lead to full blown conflict. I also ask of you to take advantage of your recent media coverage with regards to this film, and take the courageous step of stopping the trend of anti-Serb bias by telling the world that crimes were committed by all sides during the Bosnian war. Lastly, it might surprise you to know that we are not calling for the boycott of this film. On the contrary we encourage all Serbs to see this movie to more clearly understand the mechanics of propaganda and slander the entertainment industry employs on behalf of the US government. This will teach Serbs to question all American movies dealing with places their government has interfered in and compel them to support anti-defamation groups such as 28. Jun which will continue to be the voice of justice for our people.

Sincerely,

Filip Filipi on behalf of 28. Jun
